1. History of Tao Dan Park

  • Originally, the whole land of Tao Dan Park belonged to a campus of a palace managed by French goverment. In 1869, France built Miss Clavell road and separated the campus from the Palace. The garden was named Jardin de la Ville by the French, but our people used to call it Ong Thuong garden, or Boro garden.

  • From 1896 to 1926, the city built many more works on campus such as: Hieu Nhac Association, Freemasonry, Saigon Sports Club, Duc Nhi Institute,... After the French withdrew and the name of the garden was changed to "Tao Dan Garden".

  • After 1975, Tao Dan Garden changed its name to "Tao Dan Cultural Park" also known as "Tao Dan Park" and built more play areas for children.

Inside the park, the Ancient Lâm Family Tomb Area is located about 30 meters from Truong Dinh Street. This is a unified tomb complex with a large area and beautiful architecture built during the reign of Minh Mang. It is the final resting place of Mr. Lâm Tam Lang and his wife, Mrs. Mai Thi Xa. Mr. Lang, originally from Guangdong, migrated to Vietnam and passed away in 1795.

The attraction of this ancient tomb area is the architectural style of the protective wall commonly seen in old tombs. The tomb entrance and base are delicately built. In 2014, this tomb area was recognized as a City-level Architectural Heritage and has been preserved by Tao Dan Park until today.
